Ingrid Michaelson

If you've watched any television within the past two weeks, then you've probably caught the latest Old Navy ad for the store's new line of Fair Isle sweaters. The spot features an infectious track, intoned by a soothing voice that's a cross between Regina Spektor on painkillers and Lisa Loeb on ... well, nothing. If you're a fan of "Grey's Anatomy," you're probably already familiar with this singer's work. She's 26-year-old Staten Island, New York, native Ingrid Michaelson, an unsigned musician who still lives at home with her parents — hey, it frees her up for touring — and whose song "Keep Breathing" punctuated the show's dramatic season-three finale, which was seen by more than 25 million viewers. Still, Michaelson likes the fact that she's still somewhat anonymous. She can walk down the street without anyone asking for her autograph, and for her, life's still fairly normal. It's when she plays gigs that it hits her. "That's when I feel the change," she said, "because people want to meet me and they want my autograph. That's the only difference I've noticed." (MTV By Chris Harris)

WE SAY: We could listen to her all day.

Yelle

Yelle (a portmanteau of yeah and elle) is a French singer from the town of Saint-Brieuc, Bretagne. She rose to fame on myspace.com when she posted a song titled "Short Dick Cuizi", dissing Cuizinier, a member of the Parisian hip-hop group TTC. With producer and close friend GrandMarnier, Yelle has recorded a debut album Pop-Up, after her hit single "Je Veux Te Voir" (a finalized version of "Short Dick Cuizi"). As of October 2007, she is opening for Mika during his European tour.

We Say: Reminds us of another rapping lady, but we still love her.

Pegleg NYC

Retro art meet our closet! Despite a rapid ascension to early success, PEGLEG is still very much a grassroots operation. Design, marketing, web, packaging, and shipping are all done under one roof, in one room. Their future plans—aside from working on a video series and possibly opening a retail space—includes some more out-there brainstorms. “One idea is making a prosthetic limb that has a function where the foot spins in circles and can do a moonwalk,” Waltzer says. Midnight Juggernauts

Aussie new-rave trio Midnight Juggernauts, who just wrapped up their first U.S. tour supporting Summer ‘07 “It” band Justice. After tours of Europe and China, the group — guitarist-singer Andy Streetcrimes, singer-keyboardist Vin Vendetta and drummer Daniel Stricker — started accruing some major word of mouth thanks to MySpace. The dance-rockers ultimately scored their Justice gig the old-fashioned way: by cooking the French duo dinner.

Jack Penate

The South Londoner's music is slick, radio-ready pop, but its heart is rooted in the Two-Tone ska revival and the more soulful end of '80s pop. Jack Penate (being of Spanish descent, his surname is pronounced "Pen -- yah -- TAY," not "Pen -- ate") was born in Blackheath, a fairly posh London suburb, on September 9, 1984. The single's favorable buzz allowed Penate to jump to the larger indie XL Recordings for his first EP, Spit at Stars, released in the spring of 2007. (Stewart Mason, All Music Guide)

Born Ruffians

Toronto's Born Ruffians features Luke LaLonde (vocals/guitar), Mitch DeRosier (bass/vocals), and Steve Hamelin (drums). Formed in 2002, the indie rock trio creates a jaunty mix of shifty guitar riffs and hyper-chic vocals for a Pixies-esque shredded kind of sweetness. (MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide)
